Canadian pianist and composer André Mathieu (or René André Rodolphe Mathieu, as he was christened in Montreal about Feb 18, 1929) is today’s exemplory case of the ill-fated kid prodigy; for, like Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Schubert before him, he was destined to pass away in his thirties. Mathieu was the child of mentioned Canadian composer and educator Rodolphe Mathieu, and therefore received top-notch musical teaching during early child years. His enviable abilities had been quick to express themselves, and his of three Études for piano when he was just four years of age! (It appears that his dad handled them up hardly any, which could not really be stated of Mozart’s first parts.) Mathieu produced a recital debut in Montreal in 1935, a couple of days after his 6th birthday, and quickly became a nationwide sensation. The federal government of Quebec supplied financing for Mathieu to review piano in Paris for a couple of years; from 1940 on, he led the life span of the touring pianist, while learning in structure with Harold Morris in NEW YORK. In 1946, Mathieu came back to Paris for even more research with composer Arthur Honegger and pianist Jules Gentil. 2 yrs later, he came back to Canada once and for all, operating as performer and instructor. It was an enormous reduction for Canada’s musical globe when Mathieu passed away in 1968. Mathieu, who published principally for his personal instrument, held his distance from your musical vocabulary and design of the twentieth hundred years, preferring a lush Intimate idiom. There are a few piano concertos, like the aptly-named Concerto Romantique (also called the Concerto de Québec), many chamber items (including a Piano Trio and a Piano Quartet), and a small number of solo piano items. Mathieu’s music was presented prominently in the shutting ceremonies from the Montreal Olympics of 1976.
