Alla Rakha

Biography

With the passage of Ustad Alla Rakha (given birth to: Allarakha Kahn) on February 3, 2000, from a coronary attack, India lost among its most influential music artists. Known as the “Einstein of tempo” by Thankful Deceased percussionist Mickey Hart, Rakha helped expose Indian traditional music towards the western world along with his tabla playing. A longtime accompanist of sitarist Ravi Shankar, Rakha is usually kept in mind for the extremely melodic rhythms that he coaxed from his device. Soon after his loss of life, Indian chief executive K.R. Narayanan announced that “an unusual pulsation continues to be stilled. His wrists, hands, and fingers created from the tabla percussion of marvelous quality which managed the tenor and tempo of India’s distinctively assimilative musical tradition.” The child of the farmer, Rakha was created within the Phagwal town of Jammu, 80 kilometres from Lahore. Departing home, at age 12, he relocated into an uncle’s house in Gurdaspur. Influenced from the playing of regional musicians, he persuaded tabla participant Mian Qader Baksh from the Punjab Gharana (college) to consider him on like a disciple. He also analyzed with Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan, who trained him the melodic vocal design Raag Vidya. Rakha perfected his lessons quickly. By his 15th birthday, he previously begun dealing with a movie theater company. After functioning as an accompanist in Lahore, Rakha recognized a posture with All India Radio in Delhi in 1936. He continued to be with the place until 1940 when he became associated with the Hindi film sector as a program musician. He ultimately rose to the positioning of music movie director for Rangmahal Studios. Shifting to traditional music in 1948, Rakha resumed his profession as an accompanist. Furthermore to dealing with Ravi Shankar through the entire 1960s and ‘70s, he collaborated with sitarist Vilayat Khan and American drummer Pal Full, with whom he documented the East-meets-West record Full A La Rakha. Rakha’s legacy is certainly continuing by his sons Zakir Hussein and Fazal Quereshi. His favorite daughter, Razia, passed away of an abrupt heart attack the night time before his very own loss of life.
