Ali Haurand

b. Alfred Antonius Josef Haurand, 15 November 1943, Viersen, Germany. Haurand discovered the dual bass and percussion at college and performed in beginner dixieland rings as an adolescent. He analyzed music at Volkswangschule, Essen (1965-71) even though he was there experienced his personal trio. In 1970 he began the group Third Vision which survived in to the middle-80s despite staff adjustments. In 1977 he became a member of the Western Jazz Quintet. In 1978 with Alan Skidmore and Tony Oxley he created SOH which may also be enlarged to a quartet with the help of Kenny Wheeler or John Surman. With Oxley’s propulsive drumming, Haurand’s cellular, assertive bass playing combines to supply a formidable tempo section. Between 1977 and 1980 he caused the Hungarian clarinettist Lajos Dudas. He created the Quintet with Joachim Kuhn and Enrico Rava in 1985.
