Caturla studied in Havana and in addition with Boulanger in Paris. He founded and carried out the Orquesta de Conciertos de Caibarién. Caturla’s compositions had been energetic concoctions of Afro-Cuban rhythms, damaged forms, uncommon chord mixtures, and unbalanced orchestrations. Although his history was white, he attemptedto synthesize the white and dark quality of Cuban music. Caturla produced his living as an attorney and served like a municipal judge in his indigenous town. He was shot lifeless by a legal from bail who was simply prosecuted in his courtroom.
