Gospel music found Africa through the music of Zimbabwe-born guitarist and vocalist Machanic Manyeruke (given birth to in 1950) and his three-piece group, the Puritans. Manyeruke primarily attracted interest in the first ’70s as the first choice of a big choir, the Gospel Performers. Developing the Puritans in 1985, Manyeruke got a scaled-down strategy, placing his soulful vocals and guitar towards the accompaniment of keyboards and two woman vocalists. The effect was a audio that allowed his Bible-based music to soar with enthusiasm and religious conviction. Manyeruke as well as the Puritans’ self-titled 1986 debut recording was praised by www.Bluesworld.com because of its “haunting beauty of melodies that are unforgettable.”
