Dirt Nation

NY rap trio comprising JB (b. Brooklyn, NY, USA), KD (b. Jamaica, Western world Indies) and E Depp (b. NJ, USA). Specialising in simple, conveniently palatable (at least musically) items, Dirt Country’s debut 45, ‘Khadijah’, became a summertime 1993 strike throughout metropolitan America. Quoting Curtis Mayfield, Jimmy McGriff and Marvin Gaye, and alluding towards the fantastic age of spirit in its mellow rhythms as well, ‘Khadijah’ was a tribute towards the womenfolk frequently degraded as ‘bitches’ and ‘ho’s’ in gangsta rhymes. The group fulfilled at college in Maryland, relocating to Manhattan searching for a record agreement. There they documented their debut one, plus a monitor with rapper Biggie Smalls (Mary J. Blige). Their debut record’s name was lifted in the movie from the same name, while a cooperation with Master of Gang Starr was also mooted.
