Joe Morello

An excellent drummer, Joe Morello played in early stages with Phil Woods and Sal Salvador. He previously brief stints during 1952-1953 with Johnny Smith, Stan Kenton’s Orchestra, and Gil Melle, but actually obtained a strong status for his use the Marian McPartland Trio (1953-1956); he also performed through the period with Tal Farlow and Jimmy Raney. Morello obtained fame as an associate from the Dave Brubeck Quartet during 1956-1967, allowing for Brubeck to test out unusual period signatures. Because of his faltering eyesight (he proceeded to go blind in 1976), Morello mainly worked like a drum trainer in old age (Danny Gottlieb was students), but nonetheless performed and participated in reunions with Brubeck and McPartland. He led classes for Rating (1956), RCA (1961-1962), Ovation (1969), and DMP (1993-1994). Morello passed away on March 12, 2011 at his house in Irvington, NJ. He was 82.
